New
Alternatives for 3-Plate Molds
Progressive offers mold
designers more flexibility with 3-plate molds through the introduction
of advanced solutions that have been proven in the field.
|
 |
|
Old
Approach... |
Advanced
Solution. |
For example, the illustration
provided at right compares the old (left) and new approaches to designing and
building 3-plate molds. Rather than spending valuable shop time adapting
a drill bushing,
Puller Pins and Bushings are sized for standard plate
thicknesses, are ready to use out of the box and enable a quick and
secure installation.
Considerable savings is also
gained by eliminating the manufacturing of a core pin retainer plate, as
well as the required mold base machining, by utilizing Progressive's
Core Pin Retainers.
As for performance, the
Bushings feature a tapered lead-in for smooth, long-term performance
and ease of replacement for those who will later live
with the tool. Puller Pin undercuts are heat treated after
machining for added durability.
Oftentimes, proper control of
parting line sequencing in 3-plate molds is critical to avoid severe
mold damage and downtime. For this, Progressive offers these effective
plate control devices:
-
External Cam-Driven Plate
Locks provide mechanically controlled movement to achieve positive
plate sequencing.
-
Roller Pullers control the sequence of plate movements to
eliminate stripper bolts across parting lines and fixed open heights.
-
Friction Pullers feature indicator arrows for consistent
setting, with internal venting and self location features.

It's Been Said |

The
Dove Tail (DT) Series Collapsible Core was introduced last year at NPE
by Roehr Tool Corporation, part of the PCIC Group, and then at EuroMold
in December, Progressive introduced a standardized DT Core. Already,
customers are offering positive feedback, including Geoff Luther of A-1
Tool, who worked with Roehr on a mold project involving four inserts
with three different threads that had to have the ability to be
interchanged inside the press. The DT Cores provided the perfect
solution.
“We built a tool for our
customer that’s easier to run and it saved us from having to work with
different sizes and types of threads in a tool that would have been
impossible to run using a traditional unscrewing configuration,” said
Luther. “We were impressed that we were able to pull a much deeper
undercut compared to other, more traditional styles of collapsing cores.
Plus, having cooling capability in them was great, especially when we
saw how well they cooled at the transfer to the individual segments. We
were very impressed with the technical support and the finished product,
and have already talked with other customers looking to do similar
projects. We’ll be looking at using the DT Cores again.”
