Improved Slide Retention Capabilities
|

Progressive's CamActions provide standard solutions for
molding and releasing external undercuts. Now, the
CA-300 and CA-400 Series
are offered
with Progressive's SRT Slide Retainers
installed, utilizing this reliable method for maintaining
the slide position during the ‘mold open’ stage.
Progressive’s exclusive
SRT's
reliably hold side actions from 10 to 80 pounds
(4 to 36
kg). Very compact, it provides the maximum amount of holding
power in the minimum amount of space.
SRT benefits include:
• Engineered springs that provide consistent holding
performance
• Grease-free operation, while not gall-ing as other
systems are prone to do
• Rather than tapping for #2-56 threads in the mold base,
the SRT-10 threads are #4-48 and, at a height of .160", can
be installed in a wear plate
CA-300 and CA-400 are available off-the-shelf and are proven
standards that are also economical in both time and cost
versus making them in-house.

Recently, at the Plastec West trade show in Anaheim, Progressive demonstrated the advantages of utilizing Expandable Cavities in medical applications.
Expandable Cavities (Ex-Cav’s) were developed to mold parts with external details such as threads without the need for conventional side action components.
Progressive had an actual medical mold
on display in its booth. It was built using
expandable cavities to mold a luer cap
that features the standard ANSI external
luer thread design and internal taper.
Using Ex-Cavs simplified the creation
of these features and provided the
following benefits:
• A simpler mold with fewer moving parts
• Reduction in design time
• Ability to use a smaller mold base or fit more cavities into the existing base
• Cost savings from reduced press size
• Easier maintenance and less downtime
• Grease-free operation

Even when used in an unconventional manner, Progressive’s External Plate Locks fit the bill for performance and value.
Robert Lenck of McKechnie Tooling told us, “Sometimes we use components in a way that is not exactly as they are intended to be used. What we’re doing is driving a second set of ejector plates where we have an extended knockout rod so that, as it pushes the top plate, it’s pulling the second set of plates along for a dual ejection application. Progressive’s External Plate Locks provided the best option over other products on the market and they are working out really well.
“Because of how we’re using them, timing and clearance issues could come into play so the availability of replacement parts with fast delivery means a lot, too,” Bob added.
“We’ll use these again, definitely.”
