Progressive Components Introduces New C-Cores™

RTC & GZ Series are the Latest in Pre-Engineered Collapsible Core Technology

Wauconda, IL U.S.A. -- Progressive Components, the leading supplier of components for the injection mold, blow mold and die cast tooling industries worldwide, has unveiled its new, pre-engineered Collapsible Cores, dubbed “C-Cores™”. The announcement was made on June 19th at NPE 2006.

Progressive recently purchased the assets of Roehr Tool Corporation, an international leader in collapsible core technology, and is now distributing Roehr products. In addition, it has been announced that Progressive and Roehr are introducing an alternative collapsible core design.

“The C-Cores from Roehr that are the universally recognized product – or as we refer to them, the RT Series – are a mature, established standard and are proven for a wide range of applications,” said Randy Winton, R&D Manager at Progressive Components. “However, no two molds are alike and different molds may have some unique restrictions and limitations.

“The GZ Series offers a shorter height than other approaches, which can be an advantage in stack molds and spinning cube molds where there are limitations on height or orientation,” he continued. “There are several ways to ‘skin the cat’, so to speak, and the best approach for internal undercuts is not a one-size-fits-all solution. In fact, sometimes upon evaluating a customer’s application we will recommend a traditional gear rack system or, better yet, a servo-driven system. The bottom line is that Progressive is well-versed in available options, familiar with the technology and can provide a recommendation where we can do the math on the facts and address any fears or misconceptions.”

Glenn Starkey, president of Progressive Components, added, “At Progressive, calling this range of products ‘C-Cores’ has a double meaning. At first glance one may think it means only collapsible cores, but to us it also stands for ‘consultation’. Nobody is out there bringing the moldmaker, molder and OEM into the same room and evaluating with them the optimal approach for their cap and closure applications. That’s an opportunity.

“When you’ve got some approaches that will cut three seconds off a cycle time, the correct answer for a mold designer might not be ‘but we’ve always done it this way’,” he continued. “Instead, we can evaluate current methods and do the math on the savings of different approaches. Sometimes that includes something simple like a vision system recommendation all the way through to recommending a spinning cube approach and an intro to a source that can provide that.”

The RT Series and GZ Series offer toolmakers and processors the following advantages:

  • Simplification of mold designs and elimination of gear/rack systems

  • Save time by purchasing with undercuts already machined

  • Reduction of mold height and press size requirements

Although standard sizes have been defined in the GZ product line, Progressive is working with molders on special applications.

Expandable Options

In addition to C-Core technology, Progressive and Roehr also offer customers the advantages of Expandable Cavity technology. Expandable Cavities reliably mold parts with undercut details such as threads, dimples, and protrusions. They eliminate the need for side-action mechanisms and the required extensive machining of components and mold bases. In addition to simplifying new tooling design, Expandable Cavities reduce the size of the mold as well as the size of the press that is required.

With worldwide distribution, Progressive Components leads with innovation and new standards that help speed mold building and reduce mold downtime.
